If you are like most people, you
probably think we live in a Democracy. If that is the case, then
like most people, you are wrong. Our form of government is NOT
a Democracy, it is a Constitutional Republic. Think back to your
early school days when you would recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of
America, and to the Republic, for which it stands". Notice that is says "Republic",
not Democracy.
What's the big deal, you may ask?
This is a big deal. There is a big difference between a Democracy
and a Republic. In a Democracy, there is majority rule. The will
of the majority rules. The only rights you have in a democracy
are the rights the majority gives you. In a Democracy, the will
of the majority takes priority over the rights of the individual.
In a Republic, the situation is
reversed. Individual rights take priority over the will of the
majority. The rights you have in a Republic are protected from
being voted away by an ignorant majority. In our Republic, the
Constitution lists our individual rights. These rights you are
born with, not granted by the government or the majority. They
are listed in the Constitution to remind the government that it
is THEIR job to protect those rights. It is our job to make sure
the government does what they are supposed to.
If we are to preserve our Constitution,
and our Civil Rights, we must guard our Republic against any change
toward a Democracy. If you thought we live in a Democracy, you
owe it to yourself to check out the links I have listed below.
